 | Middle School - Pyramids, Tents and Robots 2/21/2012
Lately, walking into the middle school pod has been even louder for visitors. Pyramids and tents abound; students screaming just as loudly when a robot doesn’t perform the planned mission (at the high decibel readings only middle schoolers can make) as if it had successfully completed the mission. Students going by names like Alaska Sol and Jeremy Finders from the early 1900s writing in their journals about the trials and tribulations of being thirsty in the desert, complaining about a colleague’s snoring at night, or being exhausted from days of digging and digging to no avail. Palm trees are swaying above the tents that archeologists have built and working in. Hearing students discussing and laboring over strange looking artifacts they have just uncovered (with their 2012 robots), sketching, researching without a computer, and writing to sponsors who want to know where their money is going is part of everyday life in sixth grade. Studying Egypt in this manner is called integrated or interdisciplinary studies. Combining important skills from several subject areas into a common theme is an effective and rewarding experience for both teacher and students. Come on up to the middle school pod and watch sixth graders in a rich simulation. Maybe you’ll even see them engineering a different way to solve a problem! (Click on the headline to see photos.)

  Fifth Grade Transition Night 2/13/2012
CCDS hosted the Fifth Grade Transition Night last week. It was well attended and received positive feedback. The evening started with a wonderful dinner, followed by many speakers; two were 2011 CCDS graduates Autumn and Gabriela Jocas. Next, parents and students moved to the gym where middle school faculty set up displays for the different types of curriculum fifth graders will experience in middle school. CCDS is committed to informing parents and our students of the benefits of our middle school. There will be two additional upcoming events to further introduce the fifth graders to the world of middle school. (To see all photos click on the title.)

Grade 8 Language Arts Book Report Project 2/7/2012
Why CCDS? Because we challenge our student's imagination in every subject, even in the way we do our book reports! Our 8th grade Language Arts class created cereal boxes for their independent reading project. Each student needed to cover a cereal box with all the literary elements pertaining to their book and studied in class (Theme, Plot, Setting, Point of View, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution, Conflict, Tone, Mood, Antagonist, Protagonist, Flashback, Foreshadowing and Figurative Language). For Figurative Language, students were required to give examples from their books of simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, assonance and hyperbole. Each cereal box needed to have the book title, the author and the student's name. Here are a few photos of these unique boxes, click on the title to view all the photos. Ask your student about his/her project.

Canton Country Day's Kindergarten did a presentation on "Caring" for the Monday Assembly. Students created individual posters of what caring meant to them. The class poster (with hearts and hand prints spelling out the word "caring") will hang in the school. This is all a part of the Character Education program, which is being focused throughout our school this year. Below is a photo of the kindergarten class with their poster. They did a great job!
